Training for Dirty Kanza: Becoming Fatigue Resistant

Hopefully this will be the first of 3 posts that I’ll get out this week. This one will cover my training for Dirty Kanza, the next one the bike and gear I’m using, and then a final one with goals for the race. I ended my race season last year in August with the Leadville 100 MTB. It was an OK day and I rallied to break 8 hours after suffering and having bad legs most of the day. In September I did my first gravel race, The Crippler. I didn’t do any specific training for it and just had… Read more →

Pony Xpress 160k Race Report

Race number two of 2018 is in the books. The Pony Xpress 160k was the second race of the two race Colorado Gravel Grinder Championship series. Due to the the location of the race (Trinidad, CO – 3 hours south of Denver) the field wasn’t as big but there were still plenty of fast dudes to battle with and an extremely challenging, and amazing, course. James O. and I drove down Friday afternoon through plenty of traffic but were rewarded with a rad pizza spot right by our hotel. Saturday morning it was the typical early wake up, an awesome… Read more →

Encierro Velo 100k Race Report

my season and training hit it’s first snag the past couple of weeks. odds are over the course of a year/season it’s going to happen at some point. and just like about anything in life it’s all about how your react and let if affect you. you can let it get to you, mentally crack, and think all the fitness you worked so hard to gain has slipped away…. or you can just embrace it and roll with it because there is nothing you can do to get the time back. just move forward. for me I took the week… Read more →

Sessions:6 Offseason Program Block 5 Recap and Goals for BWR

Well… better late than never I suppose. I am already over a week into the 6th and final block of the Sessions:6 Offseason program. I’m starting to feel really fit and am cracking out to race and test my fitness. After doing some power testing and getting my new numbers we tackled some anaerobic power intervals in block 5. Block 4 was all about VO2 max intervals which I was pretty familiar with but had kind of avoided over the last few years. Anaerobic intervals are something I had never done or focused on. I did 15”, 30” and 60”… Read more →

Sessions:6 Offseason Program Block 4 Recap

Last week, with a down week and some power testing on the bike, I completed block 4 of the Sessions:6 Offseaon program. These posts may seem to be getting kind of redundant… but the gains keep on coming and fitness continues to prove with each block. I know that’s the point of training plan but I’m continued to be shocked by the power I’m putting out on the bike and strength I’ve build squatting and deadlifting. On the strength side there was no peaking or maxing out but it was pretty challenging. In this block plyometrics were introduced and the… Read more →

Sessions:6 Offseason Program Block 3 Recap

It’s hard to believe I’m already half way through the Sessions:6 Offseason Program. Time is for sure flying by and racing seems like it’s right around the corner. I was supposed to race this weekend at the Old Man Winter Bike Rally but they’re calling for snow up there Saturday with a low 7 degrees overnight. The race starts at 10am so it will likely be in the teens at the start… and that’s just not for me. On Wednesday this week I was down and out. I woke up in the middle of the night tuesday with a gnarly… Read more →

Turning 40 and 2018 Race Plans

A week ago today I turned the big 4-0. It’s kind of hard for me to believe with the way I feel and my state of mind. I never thought to much about my age but turning 40 is kind of a big deal I guess. I for sure don’t look at it any kind of negative way. It’s quite the opposite. I’m stoked with where I am in my life and where I’m at physically. I can honestly say that I have never been happier in life than I am right now… and it just keeps getting better. I… Read more →

Sessions:6 Offseason Program Block 2 Recap

Last week I finished off block 2 of the Sessions:6 Offseason program with a recovery week and some testing on the bike. I’m stoked that I’m already two months into my training for the year when a lot of people are just getting started. That’s one of the benefits of ending your season in September. On Saturday I’ll find if get into the Dirty Kanza. I would lying if I said it would be a huge bummer if I don’t. The idea of racing (suffering) for 206 miles with some fast dudes has definitely provided some fuel to my training… Read more →

November (block 1) Recap

I know blogs are basically a thing of the past but I have had this blog since I started racing and training back in 2005. I’m pretty sure I have a race report of 99% of the races I’ve done. When I’m done with all of this it will be fun to look back on… it already is. It also lets me see what I was doing in training in the months leading up to those races. Since I’m being coach this year, leading up to my races this year I think I am going to do a monthly recap… Read more →

it’s about that time…

wow… it’s been a crazy month. I knew it would be a bit hectic but I had no idea how much. I started another blog shortly after I got my new-to-me gravel bike (cannondale slate) and after racing my first gravel race, The Crippler. With everything going on I didn’t get around to finishing it. A quick summary… it was hard, it was really cold, and it was awesome. I’m totally hooked on the idea of gravel racing, which I knew I would be, and can’t wait to tackle some more offroad challenges in the future. The week after the… Read more →
