2017 is well underway and our plan for racing is slowly coming together. I also turned 39 years old a couple of weeks… damn time is flying but I am loving every day.
After ending the year with a good race at The North Face 50 I took it pretty easy for a few weeks and that was a bit easier because my calf, or something in my lower leg, was kind of jacked. So I started riding a bit and got back to lifting weights… both things did not aggravate it. After a year with a lot of running it was a much needed break.
After having a very successful season of racing last year, Maggie is going to have another go at the Leadville 100… and by go I mean she is going to totally go for it. She was a bit disappointed with last years race and had the feeling that she held back too much. This year that will not be her strategy. I am excited to watch her rip up the trails and roads again this year.
There will be no 100 mile running race for me this year… the desire is just not there… and I don’t think it ever really was. Don’t get me wrong, I was stoked to toe the line last year at Run Rabbit Run. When it comes to racing… I really like to race. I know a lot of people “race” the 100 mile distance but to me it didn’t have the same excitement as hammering a 50k or going for it in a 50 miler… and that’s just me. Racing the WIEM 50k and North Face 50 mile last fall reminded me of how much I like that feeling. There will likely come a time, hopefully next summer, when I toe the line at a 100 miler but that’s only going to be if I really want to run that far… and as of right now it’s just not something I want to focus on this year.
So after mostly focusing on ultrarunning for the past few years (2013-2016) and only racing my bike a few times I am going put to more focus on the bike and a little less on running. I love to run for sure but the fire to race my bike came back totally unexpected this winter and I’m going to go with it. Also, with running… and more specifically ultrarunning… I feel like I am always walking that fine line of putting in the volume I need to race well and doing too much and ending up injured (mostly my wonky right lower leg). As I’ve written about before and I can put in massive volume on the bike, get super fit, and feel great doing it with zero worries of getting hurt.
One the big things driving my stoke for the bike right now is the thought of getting back to racing a full season of cyclocross in the fall. It’s still the most fun form of racing I’ve ever done. I’ve had the intentions of jumping back in the past few years but after a full season of running the thought of racing all fall has not appealed to me. So I don’t plan on racing a whole lot by my own standards this year in hopes that when September rolls around I’ll be ready to rip.
I’m still going to run and race some ultras but my main focus is cycling this year and that’s part of longer term plan. Next summer I will be 40 I want to make a go at the Leadville Leadman record. In order to do that I need to be come “cyclist” again and be able to hammer the bike races over the summer. I know I can run well on lower volume and I think I can make a go at the record but it will all come down to the 100 run… which for sure is a big wildcard since I’ve never completed a 100.
So with all of that here’s races I’m (tentatively) going to line up for this year.
- 4.29 – Cheyenne Mountain 50k (run)
- 5.13 – Battle the Bear (57 mile mtb)
- 6.3 – Dirty 30 50k (run)
- 6.17 – Bailey Hundo (100 mile mtb)
- 7.4 – Firecrack 50 (mtb)
- 7/29 – Pike Peak Ultra 50k (run)
- 8/19 – Pace Maggie at Leadville 100
- Fall 2017 – Cyclocross
The big goals for the first half of the year are the Dirty 30 50k and Bailey Hundo. Much like my focus on Silver King last year I want to compete at both the running and cycling events but this time in a 2 weeks window as opposed to 2 days. The goals it to race for the podium at both races. After those races I will just kind of enjoy the summer and hopefully get in some big runs with Maggie as she gets ready to rip Leadville the it will be onto ‘cross season.
Maybe if I can muster the motivation post again in the near future I will post on what my training plan is for the Dirty 30/Bailey Hundo double. I’m a bout 2 months into it and feeling great.
